Adult circumcision outcomes study: the effect on erectile dysfunction, lack of penile sensitivity, sexual activity and reduced satisfaction compared to the natural penis with a foreskin (not circumcised).
Evidence concerning the effect of circumcision on sexual dysfunction is present. Men circumcised as adults are potentially in a unique position to comment on the effect of a prepuce (foreskin) on sexual foreplay and intercourse. We examine the sexual function outcomes in men who have experienced enjoyment of foreplay and sexual intercourse in the uncircumcised and circumcised states.
Men 18 years old or older when circumcised, took part in this study during a period, at an academic medical center. Formal records were reviewed for confirmation of the procedure and to identify the indications. These men were surveyed to assess erectile function, penile sensitivity, sexual activity and overall satisfaction compared to when they were not circumcised. The data was analyzed using paired tests to compare category scores before and after circumcision.
The results indicated included 265 sexually active men who were circumcised as adults (above the age of 18 years), and did not include any men who were circumcised when they were below the age of 18 years. The response rate was 87% of those asked to respond. The average age of responders was 45 years. Out of the 230 men who chose to respond some had been circumcised for valid medical reasons, others for cosmetic, cultural or religious reasons.
Adult circumcision appears to result in worsened erectile function (erectile dysfunction), decreased penile sensitivity, no change in the desire for sexual activity, but reduced overall satisfaction, compared to their findings before each individual underwent circumcision. Of the 230 men that chose to respond, 68% reported harm. Overall, 72% of men were not satisfied with having been circumcised.
The conclusion of the findings may help urologists better counsel men requesting circumcision as adults. More studies are required to improve understanding and knowledge regarding the relationship between circumcision and it’s effect on sexual and erectile dysfunction.
